Compassionate Care in the Desert
Samaritan's Purse Hong Kong

A hospital supported by Samaritan’s Purse provides quality health care and examples of God’s love to nomadic Bedouins

For more than 40 years, the hospital for chest diseases in Mafraq has been an oasis of compassion in the harsh desert of Jordan. Started by a small band of committed Christians, the hospital has grown in both size and reputation, and there is always a crowd waiting at the gate when the clinic opens each morning.

In a region where poor Bedouin people still live in goat-hair tents, there is no other facility that offers quality, affordable healthcare. Thousands of poor Bedouins have passed through the doors, and on any given day the halls echo with the sound of coughing and children crying as those suffering from asthma, tuberculosis, and a host of other ailments seek physical relief and spiritual comfort at the outpatient clinic.

Most of them have minor conditions and are given the medicine they need. Some, however, are more difficult cases, requiring a months-long stay in the hospital. These patients are given loving, Christian care and participate in weekly prayer meetings with the staff.

“They have treated me as more than a family,” said one patient. “The Christians are really good people. I feel loved and safe. I will never forget the way they have shown me about Jesus and what it means to follow Him.”

Samaritan’s Purse has partnered with the hospital in Mafraq for decades, helping to bring God’s love to the suffering. Through the years, we have worked hand-in-hand with the staff as they expanded their ministry, which now includes a mobile dental unit and a children’s home.

“The Lord brings us these patients,” said Dr. Nassri, one of the founding staff members.” “We have a responsibility to show these people that Christians are loving, joyful people. We must glorify the Lord with what we do.”
